Artist Statement
As a photographer, when it comes to nude photos, I often find that the subtext is: “My body is for you”. My work looks at the naked body through the female gaze. It evokes freedom and personal control — shifting the subtext to say, “I am free. I do what I want.”
Project Statement
Series #1 is a collection of 4 images that evoke freedom through the female gaze.
The models I selected are all from different backgrounds yet all carry personality traits that I knew would translate to film: kindness, loyalty, and confidence.
The white fabric you see wrapped around them was carefully selected and cut. I tested 5 different options for weight, shine, and the fabric’s ability to flow with the ocean breeze. It symbolizes connectivity and therefore, sisterhood.
Freedom to me, as a woman, means control over what I want to do with my body. Connectivity is sharing my experiences about my womanhood and finding listening ears. Sisterhood means that those listening ears are never going to judge me for my choices.
